Here's the story.

I recently moved homes and found some music tapes and CD's I played on in the 1980's & 1990's.

Now, I know most of you under 40 guys post your wild - double strokin - foot flappin' bass drummin' solos etc. here but I thought I'd offer something different.

The particular piece below (recorded in 1991) brought back some great memories and made me realize how advanced drums (electronic in general) have become in the past 10 years.

ARTIST: I recorded this track with a guy who used to write film scores in the 1960's - 1990's.

TRACK: This was one of several "film score" sounding tracks that also got airplay on several New Age radio stations. It was written in 4/4 but the artist wanted a 9/8 feel

The entire CD was recorded using SOUND TOOLS (released in 1988)!
We were one of the first home studios to use that software and the guys at MAC would actually call us and ask us "how's it working?"

DRUMS: Here's the interesting part. I played the entire track (and cd for that matter) on a single DrumKAT. One pass - several retakes

I still have the DrumKAT. It is one of the first 300 KATs ever made. I purchased it from the developer Bill Katoski himself! It had a simple manual and no accesories - but I managed to mock it up a bit.

I did have a KAT bass drum trigger - which for this session was duct taped to a small carpet. For the hi-hat + - I used an on/off trigger foot pedal also duct taped and a pain as it felt nothing like a real hi-hat.

I was midi'ed thru both a Roland R8 and a Proteus. The instruments playing were a Keyboard, EWI, and myself.

Ok... some of you probably won't like this track as "substance-wise" it's a bit out there.

However, while you're listening think of 1991 - a "cutting edge" drummer (for the time) using electronic instrumentation that was new to everyone - duct taped to the floor no less - trying to get a real drum 9/8 feel to a 4/4 tune - on an "unknown-to-most" square trigger pad - recording direct to a dinosaur PC in the PRE-INTERNET DAYS!

Hehheeh... I hope you find some enjoyment in the tune. The entire CD has some good tunes actually.

It definitely has an odd time flavor to it.
Cool tune, and nice playing - pity it wasn't done on acoustic
drums! ;-)

DUDE! This would be a fine compliment to your play along workout book! It reminded me a little of the Jeff Porcaro supplement MD used to offer back in the 80?s. Those were cool little plastic records. Fun stuff.

Thanks guys... I actually may have a live recording of that tune somewhere on cassette tape.

The more I listen to the CD the more I think we should have sold the tunes to a video game manufacturer!

Plus.... in 1991 my playing was probably influenced by the plastic records in MD. I remember playing the Weckl one until the turntable needle cut it in half.

Nice playing indeed, thanks for sharing!

Pocket - do you ever remember getting the MD sound supplement with Gary Chaffee/Steve Smith on it called 'Seventh Heaven'?

It was a written drum concerto which Gary wrote for Vinnie & Steve to perform and is very difficult and complex to play. I wore it out!

Wow, that was cool. In a novel/retro kinda way!

Yeah, I have heard video game music very similar to this - as well as sci-fi soundtracks and maybe some Thomas Dolby!

Hard to imagine this performed on a Drum KAT!

Well done (y)

P.S. Synth flutes are the funniest things ever!!! ZAMFIR WOULD BE TURNING IN HIS GRAVE! (if he were dead, that is)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yup... 100% DrumKAT.

We actually tried to record it on acoustic drums but the Artist's home studio where we recorded the CD was having new sewer lines put in the street and the jackhammers were actually being picked up by his highly sensitive pre-historic Sennheiser microphones.

I might actually have a B/W photo from the session. See, we didn't have digital cameras and the abilty to record direct to CD in those days!

In fact... I only have 2 sessions that actually made it to CD due to the cost to actually self-produce a CD in the late 80's.

I did happen to find a VHS video of a quick drum solo I played in my garage. It was around 1987 and complete with "mulleted" hair.

I doubt I'll share this video...hehehe

It was kind of refreshing to see how I actually "jammed" back then before the Weckl influenced days of later when most drummers were actually copying his style.
